Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s nine-day Asian tour may help to expand business opportunities within the U.S. defense industry, National Defense Magazine reports.

He is scheduled to talk about U.S.’ plans to strengthen its military presence and cooperation within the Asia-Pacific region.

Sandra Erwin reported that Panetta will not focus on trade delegations but on selling major weapons systems.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Martin Dempsey and U.S. Pacific Command chief Navy Adm. Samuel J. Locklear III will accompany Panetta.

India, South Korea, Pakistan, China and Singapore account for 30 percent of the total weapon sales worldwide, according to Erwin.

The Obama administration forecasts that an arms race in the region will augment orders for U.S. manufacturers and contribute to U.S. economic recovery, according to the report.

The U.S. and India have shared various military sales agreements but American manufacturers are hoping to augment the relationship further, Erwin reported.
