Executive branch agencies spent an estimated $11.4 billion on classified information systems and programs in fiscal year 2011, Federal Times reports.

According to writer Sean Reilly, that marks a 12 percent increase from fiscal 2010 and more than a 50 percent increase from 10 years ago.

The Information Security Oversight Office, a branch of the National Archives and Records Administration, examined spending on classified programs.

Additional raises included a more than 20 percent increase on both protection and maintenance for information systems and physical security, Reilly reports.

The office’s report does not include spending from agencies like the National Reconnaissance Office, the CIA and four other agencies that work almost entirely in secrecy.

Federal Times cited the 2010 WikiLeaks incident as a reason why the government is taking additional precautions in protecting information.
