The Defense Department spent an estimated $14.1 billion more than expected during its most recent round of Base Realignment and Closures, according to recent Government Accountability Office report.
BRAC costs for this round totaled $35.1 billion, 67 percent more than the Pentagon’s original prediction of $21 billion, auditors found.
GAO cited increased construction expenditures as the main contributing factor of the rounds that began in 2005 and was scheduled to complete by Sept. 15, 2011.
The process involved 800 defense locations and moved more than 125,000 personnel.
In early March, the Pentagon asked Congress to approve the next BRAC round for 2015, which would occur over two years.
