1 min read

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will open three new offices in Dallas, Denver, and San Jose, the Washington Post reports.

All three offices should be operational by September 2014 and a new hub in Detroit will open July 13, according to the report.

According to Timothy R. Smith’s report, the agency hopes the new offices will help reduce the more than 750,000 backlogged patent applications and expedite the approval process.

Patent Office spokeswoman Sarah Horowitz said that the new offices will mean the agency operates in four timezones.

Patents will still be applied at the agency’s headquarters in Alexandria, Va., but the agency will distribute the applications to the other locations.

The new offices marks the first time for the agency to open a facility outside the Washington region.
