With the year-end deadline approaching for Republican and White House negotiators to reach a compromise on avoiding the fiscal cliff, a West Virginia lawmaker is still optimistic a deal can happen.

National Journal reports Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) told a Politico-hosted event Tuesday she believes President Barack Obama will have a deal on his desk for signature by the end of the year.

According to Stacy Kaper’s story, Capito said she based her belief on gaps between what the president and House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) are both saying and not saying, giving them room to negotiate and shift positions.

Capito said the most important part of talks will include specific spending and entitlement cuts, Kaper reports.
