Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is resigning from his position and will not stay on for a second term in the cabinet, he announced in a blog post Tuesday.

LaHood told readers he plans to stay on until the Senate confirms his successor in an attempt “to ensure a smooth transition for the department.”

The Washington Post is reporting Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Deborah Hersman have been floated as potential successors.

LaHood has previously floated the idea of not staying on beyond one term and also said he did not plan to run for governor in Illinois, according to reports.
