James Clapper, director of national intelligence, told Federal News Radio in an interview that he will do everything in his power to avoid furloughs if sequestration cuts are triggered March 1.

Clapper told interviewer Francis Rose it is impossible to separate people from intelligence missions and he believes they are the most important resource in the intelligence community.

Decisions on how to implement cuts are clouded because the intelligence budget receives some funding from defense appropriations and others by nondefense appropriations, the station reports.

Defense funds will see a 9 percent cut and nondefense funds will see a 7 percent cut for the rest of fiscal year 2013, Federal News Radio reports.

Clapper told the station he will meet with intelligence agency leaders next week to see how they are planning for sequestration and that he may seek reprogramming authority from Congress.
