Janet Napolitano: DHS Prioritizing Future Cyber Attack Prevention

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a Senate committee Thursday that DHS is focusing on preventing future cyber attacks over combating current cyber incidents, Nextgov reports.

Aliya Sternstein writes Napolitano was addressing a question from Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) on the recent cybersecurity executive order’s ability to balance protecting intellectual property and protecting critical infrastructure for sectors such as healthcare.

“Where we are focused within the security of the United States is really on that fundamental attack, that fundamental interference that could shut us down,” she said, according to the report.

Napolitano said focusing national security on such a fundamental attack is not as marketable as other return-on-investment-oriented initiatives such as protecting intellectual property, Sternstein writes.
