Thomas Perez, a former head of the Justice Department‘s civil rights division, has been nominated by President Barack Obama to succeed Hilda Solis as labor secretary, Reuters reports.

Perez has also previously worked on civil rights issues as Maryland’s labor secretary for the Maryland state government and as a council member for Montgomery County, Md., according to the report.

Reuters reports Perez will face a tough confirmation hearing, as Senate Republicans are objecting to Perez’s nomination.

A biography posted by Federal News Radio says he also served as a director for U.S. Department of Health and Human Services‘ civil rights office for two years before joining the Montgomery County council in 2002.
