Elaine Kaplan, general counsel at the Office of Personnel Management, will assume leadership of the agency on an acting basis Monday as John Berry steps down from the director’s role after four years.

Berry informed employees in an email Thursday of his plans to leave and did not disclose what he plans to do after his departure from OPM, Federal Times reports.

The Washington Post has reported Berry is a candidate to become the next U.S. ambassador to Australia.

Kaplan joined the agency as general counsel in March 2009 and prior to that served as senior deputy general counsel of the National Treasury Employees Union, which represents more than 150,000 federal employees.

In that role, she litigated and supervised the litigation of cases in federal courts.

She has also led the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, an independent agency that investigates and prosecutes complaints regarding illegal personnel practices against civilian workers.
