Pentagon Employees Face Furloughs Under Govt Shutdown

1 min read

PentagonDeputy Defense Secretary Ash Carter has told employees in a memo that many civilian workers would be temporarily furloughed in the event of a government shutdown, the American Forces Press Service reported Monday.

Jim Garamone writes government functions that are supported by appropriated funds would have to stop if Congress and the White House do not extend funding for the government.

“To prepare for this possibility, we are updating our contingency plans for executing an orderly shutdown of activities that would be affected by a lapse in appropriations,” Carter wrote in the memo, according to AFPS.

“The department remains hopeful that a government shutdown will be averted.”
