Report: President Obama to Hold Budget Talks With Lawmakers

1 min read

WhiteHousePresident Barack Obama intends to meet with congressional leaders next week to discuss fiscal issues, Politico reported Thursday.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney confirmed the plan Thursday but did not provide a date or location for the meeting, according to a report by Jake Sherman and Jonathan Allen.

The article notes Obama will attend the United Nations General Assembly and the Clinton Global Initiative event next week in New York.

Republican lawmakers released a video Thursday and asked why Obama was willing to engage in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin but would not discuss budget concerns with Congress.

Politico reports some GOP members want to defund Obama’s healthcare reform as part of any deal to extend the debt limit and prevent a federal shutdown.

According to the article, it is a risky move for Republicans because the measure is almost guaranteed to be be vetoed by the President and could be seen by U.S. voters as an attempt to purposefully shutdown the government.

Obama has been insisting for the entirety of his second term that he will not negotiate on the debt limit because the U.S. government must “pay its bills.”
