Taiwan Receives First Anti-Sub Airplane Under $2B Sales Deal

P-3CThe U.S. Navy handed over a Lockheed Martin-built submarine-hunting airplane to Taiwan Wednesday as part of a $1.96 billion arms sale package approved in 2007, Focus Taiwan News Channel reported Wednesday.

Claudia Liu and Sofia Wu write Taiwan purchased 12 P-3C planes with T-56 turboprop engines and related equipment and services and is scheduled to receive the last plane in 2015.

Lockheed built the P-3C planes to fly for 12 hours within ranges of close to 3,200 miles, according to the report.

The channel reports Taiwan is acquiring the planes to protect navigation safety in the Taiwan Strait, a 110-mile strait located between Taiwan and China.
