Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has vowed to work with other Pentagon leaders to restore normalcy across the department, the American Forces Press Service reported Thursday.

Jim Garamone writes Hagel told reporters at a media briefing Thursday he is concerned about the recent shutdown’s impact on employee morale and the agency’s ability to recruit good workers.

“I want all of our civilian personnel to know that the work they do is critically important to this department and this country,” Hagel told reporters.

Hagel added that he believes the budget uncertainty could hurt the economy, national security, and the U.S.’ global standing.

AFPS reports the continuing resolution passed Wednesday provides congressional leaders the opportunity to craft a long-term funding strategy.
