Jill Aitoro writes Hagel thanked staff at the Bath Iron Works facility in Maine for their work on Naval ships and he said the Pentagon expects to continue its partnership with shipbuilding contractors.
“We appreciate what you do at this magnificent institution that’s been part of the security of this country for almost 130 years,” Hagel told his audience Thursday.
He also said that the Pentagon is examining what vessels should be built and which existing ones should be replaced, Aitoro reports.
“We’re doing everything we can to try to bring some certainty to this and some stability to our future budgets so that we all can plan and you all can have some sense of your futures and your families’ futures and your security,” Hagel added, according to the report.
The Navy launched the Zumwalt guided missile destroyer last month, Aitoro writes.
