Rep. Mike Rogers: Debate on Role of the Intell Community Threatens National Security Mission

Mike-RogersRep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said Sunday that controversy over federal intelligence programs is hampering efforts to protect the U.S. and its allies, Politico reported Sunday.

Mackenzie Winger writes Rogers made the remarks during an interview on CNN’s political talk show “State of the Union.”

“We’re fighting amongst ourselves here in this country about the role of our intelligence community,” Rogers told CNN, according to the report.

“It is having an impact on our ability to stop what is a growing number of threats. And so we’ve got to shake ourselves out of this pretty soon and understand that our intelligence services are not the bad guys,” he added.

Rogers noted that Al Qaeda affiliates have changed their communication strategies, which could make it harder for intelligence agencies to detect terrorist plans, according to the report.

“We’ve had to recreate all of that work, over and over and over again, every time there is a disclosure,” Rogers said.

There have been a number of recent leaks by whistleblowers including Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden.
