Vice Adm Michael Rogers (1)President Barack Obama has selected Vice Adm. Michael Rogers to lead the National Security Agency and the Defense Department’s cyber units, The Washington Post reported Saturday.

Ellen Nakashima writes Rogers could succeed incumbent NSA director Gen. Keith Alexander who will retire on March 14.

Alexander has served as NSA director since 2005 and is the first commander of U.S. Cyber Command, according to the report.

Rogers, a U.S. Navy cryptologist, has worked on cybersecurity and policy issues as head of the Fleet Cyber Command within USCYBERCOM, the report says.

“[Rogers] is the kind of leader who will embrace the challenge of defining the optimal balance for the NSA between security, privacy and freedom in the digital age,” Terry Roberts, a former Naval intelligence official, told the Post.

Nakashima writes the 30-year Navy veteran will be interviewed by the Senate Armed Services Committee.
