The Department of Homeland Security is seeking to implement a uniform security level for both private and public sector computer networks to counter emerging cyber threats, Federal News Radio reported Wednesday.Jason Miller writes DHS started developing the public-private cyber information sharing initiative five years ago.
Phyllis Schneck, deputy undersecretary for cybersecurity in DHS’ National Protections and Programs Directorate, told the station the data consolidation is intended to help increase the volume of threat and risk intelligence.
“We are suggesting some protocols that DHS has already built and some sectors have started to adopt that will send information about the security of the traffic that it’s carrying so when it arrives your computer will know whether to use it,” Schneck added.
She also told Federal News Radio the move aims to help the National Cybersecurity Communications and Integration Center mitigate attacks through several cyber indicators.
“It can actually help identify where botnets are by certain patterns,†Schneck said.
