digital governmentJeanne Holm, Data.gov‘s evangelist, said the U.S. government’s open data portal features more than 105,000 datasets for public use and has attracted 4.5 million visitors since May 2009, FCW reported Tuesday.

Mark Rockwell writes the Data.gov website is designed to give the public access to government data and tools that are not subject to control under privacy and national security laws.

Holm added that 227 federal organizations have published datasets on the portal to date, according to FCW.

The New York University’s GovLab launched a research project in 2012 to quantify the private sector’s usage of publicly available federal information.
