John Boles, formerly acting assistant director of the FBI‘s international operations division and a 19-year veteran, has been appointed to that assistant director role on a permanent basis.

The FBI said Tuesday that Boles specialized in criminal violations such as white-collar and cyber crimes, narcotics and crimes against children for his first assignment and served as a sniper team leader and operator with a SWAT team.

He was assigned to Kiev, Ukraine in 2003 as assistant legal attaché and eventually legal attache in charge of FBI programs in that country and neighboring Belarus.

He has also held the position of supervisory special agent responsible for the International Terrorism Squad and Joint Terrorism Task Force of the St. Louis division, special assistant to the national security branch’s executive assistant director and cyber division deputy assistant director.

Boles was a cryptologic technician for the U.S. Navy before he joined the FBI.
