health infosecThe Department of Health and Human Services has kicked off a challenge in search of health information technology tools from healthcare professionals as HHS seeks to address heart disease through electronic health records.

HHS’ Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT launched the EHR Innovations for Improving Hypertension contest as part of the Million Hearts initiative to reduce the number of heart attacks, HHS said Monday.

“The new challenge is designed to help patients and their care teams use health IT tools to protect and improve their cardiovascular health,” said Janet Wright, executive director of Million Hearts.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services jointly lead the Million Hearts alliance with health systems, nonprofit organizations, federal agencies and the private sector.

HHS is accepting submissions until Oct. 6 and will announce the winners on Oct. 28.
