cloudThe Office of Naval Research is turning to commercial cloud service providers in a move to take a different approach to cloud adoption, Federal News Radio reported Thursday.

Jason Miller writes ONR will launch a pilot program to consolidate the service’s SharePoint and knowledge management site into an Amazon Web Services-hosted cloud platform.

Gary Wyckoff, chief information officer of ONR, told the station that he expects to obtain approval from the Defense Department for a bid to connect from the Defense Information Systems Agency to AWS.

The Navy Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command will also host ONR’s helpdesk software, according to the report.

“The helpdesk will still be run here, but the software tracking mechanisms, asset management, change management and all those things will be tracked there at SPAWAR,” Wyckoff told Federal News Radio.

ONR intends for the SPAWAR transition to consolidate its data centers and follow the U.S. Navy’s lead, Miller reports.

Wyckoff told the station a team recently began to conduct business case analysis to determine data center options for government and commercial cloud.
