Karen DeSalvo, director of the Office of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, will move to the Department of Health and Human Services as acting assistant secretary for health, FCW reported Thursday.

FCW reports DeSalvo will work with HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell to facilitate the agency’s initiatives to end the Ebola virus outbreak.

“Dr. DeSalvo has deep roots and a belief in public health and its critical value in assuring the health of everyone, not only in crisis, but every day,” ONC said in an email obtained by FCW.

The publication reports ONC Chief Operating Officer Lisa Lewis will lead the office on an acting basis.

DeSalvo, a former health commissioner for the city of New Orleans, will continue to support ONC’s health IT programs while she serves as an HHS assistant secretary, according to the article.
