chart moneyThe National Priorities Project has unveiled its State Smart website that publishes information on the paid taxes and received budget of each state in an interactive format.

Becky Sweger reports the website uses compiled federal data from sources such as the Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. Census Bureau and Internal Revenue Service.

From these data, NPP found that businesses in most states accounted for less than 20 percent of total federal taxes received and that the Defense Department awarded at least 90 percent of the federal contracts in four states, Sweger writes.

NPP is a nonprofit organization that pushes for data transparency in government spending and revenue.
