Pentagon Seeks to Manage, Protect Defense Systems Through Big Data Analytics

big dataU.S. defense organizations are moving quickly to adopt big data and analytics tools for work such as military vehicle maintenance, infrastructure management and tactical decision-making, Defense Systems reported Friday.

Terry Costlow writes some big data projects underway at the Defense Department aim to develop new methods for analyzing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaisance information from unmanned aerial vehicles.

The Navy‘s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command has developed a Rapid Image Exploitation Resource technology that seeks to capture satellite images and detect targets such as vessels.

“We could put this on a satellite or UAV so the platform does the processing and only sends the results,” said Heidi Buck, head of SPAWAR’s automated imagery analysis group, according to the report.

Costlow reports big data techniques could also help maintenance professionals cut downtime risk or predict structural problems.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency launched the Mining and Understanding Software Enclaves program with the goal of helping programmers leverage open-source modules to identify potential computer vulnerabilities.

“The real benefits arise in programs that are complex with mission-critical characteristics,” said Suresh Jagannathan, a DARPA program manager, according to the publication.

“When there are hundreds of thousands of lines of code, big data techniques can spot the anomalies and detect bugs” Jagannathan added.

Buck noted that SPAWAR also wants to utilize crowdsourcing tools for naval users to analyze images in the event of a disaster or other critical situations.

Costlow writes the blend of human intelligence and big data could also help military personnel classify search parameters when they examine border crossings or respond to emergencies.
