U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus has said the service will reclassify modified versions of Littoral Combat Ships as Fast Frigates to reflect LCS’ overall function, Defense News reported Thursday.

“It will still be the same ship, the same program of record, just with an appropriate and traditional name,” Mabus told audience at a Surface Navy Association symposium held Thursday near Washington.

According to the report, the Navy also seeks to identify new designations for the Joint High Speed Vessel, Mobile Landing Platform and Afloat Forward Staging Base fleets.

The Defense Department has decided to upgrade the service’s LCS fleet to make the warship a frigate-like surface combatant and include new weapons.
