Ian Kalin Joins Commerce Dept as Chief Data Officer

Commerce-DepartmentIan Kalin, formerly a director of open data at Socrata, has been named the first chief data officer at the U.S Commerce Department, Nextgov reported Thursday.

Kalin told Nextgov in an interview that he aims to help the agency offer the right public information through the federal open data portal.

“I believe that there’s more that can be done to drive more content, which can drive more usage of the Data.gov,” he said during the interview.

He noted to the publication that he also intends to apply his industry experience to help the Commerce Department develop modern business practices.

Kalin also mentioned the agency’s plan to develop a new data product or service to aid programs across the department and its 12 bureaus.
