PentagonA new Government Accountability Office report says the Defense Department used competitive procedures for 58.2 percent of the $284.4 billion the Pentagon obligated for contracts and task orders in fiscal year 2014.

GAO said Friday DoD’s components and agencies showed variations in their competition rates during fiscal year 2014 and the Air Force showed the lowest rate at 43.6 percent.

From fiscal year 2010 to fiscal year 2014, the Pentagon’s competition rates ranged between 60.8 percent and 56.5 percent and products were less likely to be competed than services during the five-year period, according to GAO.

GAO conducted the DoD’s competitive contracts in response to a conference document for the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012.

Auditors were required under the FY 2012 NDAA to report annually on the military’s competitive and noncompetitive contract awards.
