1 min read

ComputerPointerThe National Archives and Records Administration has published new guidance for federal agencies to manage electronic messages that have been transmitted in the course of doing public business.

NARA said its draft bulletin covers the management of text, voicemail, chat and instant messages through mobile apps, social media and other communication platforms.

Agencies are advised to use a Capstone approach as well as implement policies and tools to capture and retain electronic messaging content.

The guide also calls for agencies to train employees to handle records electronically and ensure their organizations can export such data from the original system.

Any record transmitted on a personal account should be forwarded within 20 days to an agency’s official electronic messaging management platform, NARA added.
