The Department of Homeland Security is working to complete the implementation of its Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation program at more nondefense agencies as part of efforts to detect cyber vulnerabilities, Federal News Radio reported Thursday.

Jared Serbu writes that Andy Ozment, assistant secretary for cybersecurity and communications at DHS, told the House Homeland Security Committee in a hearing Wednesday that the program’s first phase aims to cover 97 percent of civilian agencies by the end of the year.

CDM has already been deployed at eight agencies, the report said.

Ozment also noted 45 percent of agencies have also adopted the Einstein 3A program, which DHS hopes to ramp up following the recent breach at the Office of Personnel Management.

“[The] deadlines we’re talking about are when DHS will provide the capability,” he said.

“It’s going to take a few additional months for each agency to fully implement both Einstein and CDM once the services become available.”

Serbu reports that delays with the rollout may be attributed to a lack of concrete authorization from Congress and the willingness and ability of private Internet service providers to support Einstein.
