Manson Brown, deputy administrator at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has detailed NOAA’s plan to release standards that regulate the use of commercial data in late 2015, FCW reported Wednesday.

Brown told the House Science, Space and Technology Committee’s environment subcommittee that NOAA aims to use private-sector satellite technologies in order to collect data, Zach Noble reports.

He said the policy would take into consideration the feedback from industry and the Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Act of 2015, according to the report.

The House passed a bill in May that requires NOAA to establish a data collection program in collaboration with a private company by October 2016, FCW reports.

Brown also told lawmakers he believes data could be treated as a public good while companies retain property rights to the data in a hybrid model, the report says.
