President Barack Obama has announced two Energy Department programs that seek to advance the development of clean energy platforms as part of the administration’s Clean Power Plan.

The Clean Power Plan will work to “help shepherd in a new era of clean energy jobs and a low-carbon economy that will deliver affordable and reliable power to America’s homes and businesses,” Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said Monday.

DOE said its Loan Programs Office will offer up to $1 billion in loan guarantees to back the development of rooftop solar, smart grid platforms, energy storage and other distributed energy technologies.

The department will also award $24 million in funds to support the development of 11 solar power initiatives as part of the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy’s Micro-scale Optimized Solar-cell Arrays with Integrated Concentration program.

The solar projects are aimed at reducing the cost and improve the efficiency of solar photovoltaic power platforms.
