Reuters: Interagency Tech R&D Project Aims to Curb Unauthorized Drone Operations

droneSeveral federal agencies have partnered with state and local law enforcement agencies to build technologies for monitoring unauthorized commercial use of unmanned aerial vehicles, Reuters reported Thursday.

David Morgan writes the Federal Aviation Administration and the departments of Defense and Homeland Security launched the interagency technology development project to stop unlawful drone operations.

Authorities are concerned about the possibility of UAVs colliding with commercial planes and worried that drones could be used as an attack weapon, the report said.

The New York Police Department deployed a microwave-based tracking system to monitor the flight of a commercial drone over Times Square on New Year’s Eve as part of a test, Morgan reports.
