The Obama administration has endorsed the approval of a bill that would allow private companies to exchange cyber threat information with federal agencies, The Hill newspaper reported Thursday.Cory Bennett writes the White House praised Sens. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) for their efforts to address many privacy concerns in amendments to the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act.
“I urge their Senate colleagues to carefully consider the bill, but then pass it and proceed to conference with the earlier-passed House version of cybersecurity legislation,†Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson stated.
The Senate has scheduled a session for Tuesday to vote on a CISA amendment that would give liability protection to businesses when they share data with the Secret Service and FBI.
Reuters reported the White House supports the bill’s provision authorizing the DHS to run an information exchange portal and warned it will oppose any exceptions to the proposed department-run portal.
The administration said it believes provisions to authorize disruptive measures against hackers could trigger legal issues and affect the U.S.’ foreign policy, according to Patricia Zengerle‘s article.
