Carlos Cases, formerly special agent responsible for the San Juan division at FBI, has been named assistant director of the international operations division at the bureau’s headquarters in Washington.

Cases will begin in his new role in January, the bureau said Thursday.

He joined FBI in 1992 and performed investigations on organized crimes, illegal drugs and violent crimes at the bureau’s El Paso division.

Cases became section chief for the Latin America/Southwest border section at the bureau’s criminal investigative division in 2011 and helped coordinate investigations on gang and drug-related cases in 2005 as program manager at the U.S. embassy in Mexico City.
