Richard Spencer Christens Navy’s Independence-Class Littoral Combat Ship USS Pierre

Navy Secretary Richard Spencer, a 2019 Wash100 winner, has named an Independence-class littoral combat ship after the city of Pierre in South Dakota.

Austal USA will construct the future USS Pierre, also known as LCS 38, in Mobile, Ala., the military service said Tuesday.

The 419-foot-long ship is designed to navigate at speeds of over 40 knots and will feature a 104-foot-long beam. An LCS works to perform surface warfare, mine countermeasures and anti-submarine warfare missions.

The service said 11 LCS vessels are in the manufacturing phase with seven units under pre-production stage.
