Vice Adm. Thomas Moore: NAVSEA Plans to Modify Maintenance Contract Strategy With Private Shipyards

U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Thomas Moore, head of Naval Sea Systems Command, has said NAVSEA plans to introduce changes to the multiple-award contract/multi-order strategy in an effort to improve the contracting process with private yards for ship maintenance work, USNI News reported Wednesday. NAVSEA has started a pilot program that aims to combine ship maintenance availabilities to provide private yards with a “little more stable and predictive work” and facilitate on-time delivery of ships, Moore said Tuesday at the American Society of Naval Engineers’ Fleet Maintenance and Modernization Symposium.

Navy Opens New Submarine Facility at Norfolk-Based Shipyard

Norfolk Naval Shipyard has launched a new submarine maintenance facility to boost the timeliness of ship deliveries from the U.S. Navy's public shipyards. The two-storey facility supports the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Plan, and houses maintenance, production and support activities in a single venue beside the shipyard's submarine drydocks, Naval Sea Systems Command said Tuesday. The 24,000-square foot building employs an open-office design to accommodate collaborative work with teams working on submarine projects.
