USAF-MIT R&D Partnership to Tackle AI Tech

The U.S. Air Force has contracted the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to perform research and development on artificial intelligence technologies. The institute will work with 11 selected airmen to study, develop and field AI technologies to address national security and real-world issues, USAF said Monday. The service branch will allot $15 million annually for the partnership.

Report: Poor Contract Handling Leads EPA to Pay ‘Unallowable’ Fees

A new watchdog report shows the Environmental Protection Agency overpaid contractors in a $100 million information technology contract due to poor contract management controls. The audit issued Monday by EPA’s office of inspector general reviewed 11 of 64 invoices released between March 2018 and February 2019 through a single task order under the contract with SRA International. The IG said it received a complaint about EPA’s invoices and payments.

DOE Allots Funds for AI Research Projects

The Department of Energy is investing $20 million in research and development projects to apply artificial intelligence to energy science and grid management. DOE said Wednesday. Eight projects have been identified that would receive a combined amount of almost $7 million to study on AI, big data and machine learning applications in grid resiliency. These projects are funded under DOE's Office of Electricity.

DOE Announces $95M Funding for SBIR, STTR Phase II

The Department of Energy intends to award $95 million in 86 grants across 74 firms under the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs. The grants cover phase II of the programs and would finance projects that passed technical feasibility qualifications during the first phase, DOE said Monday. Each awardee would receive a grant valued around $1 million covering a two-year research and development period for prototyping.
