Christopher Wray on FBI’s Efforts to Fight Threats Posed by Russia, China

FBI Director Christopher Wray said Russia continues to carry out election interference efforts and that the U.S. considers China as the most “severe counterintelligence threat,” Nextgov reported Wednesday. Wray told the Senate Judiciary Committee in his testimony Tuesday that the bureau is collaborating with the private sector and other federal agencies to make the public aware of Russia’s influence and misinformation campaigns as well as counter the spread of deepfakes.

Mark Esper Directs Creation of PFAS Chemical Contamination Task Force

Defense Secretary and 2019 Wash100 Award winner Mark Esper is calling on the Department of Defense to create a task force to address the issue of contamination from firefighting foam at over 400 military facilities, Military.com reported Wednesday. Esper stated in a memo that the task force will be led by the assistant secretary of defense for sustainment.

David Norquist Discusses Analytics, AI at Senate Confirmation Hearing

David Norquist, the White House’s nominee for deputy defense secretary and 2019 Wash100 Award winner, said he wants the Department of Defense to advance its use of artificial intelligence, data analytics and other emerging technologies to implement the 2018 National Defense Strategy, Defense News reported Wednesday. Norquist, who serves as DoD comptroller, told the Senate Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing Wednesday about the potential benefits of AI.

DHS S&T to Test Speech Analytic Platforms

The Department of Homeland Security's science and technology directorate has launched a program to assess speech analytic technologies. Facilitated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Open Speech Analytic Technologies Evaluation Series will enable the directorate to evaluate voice-based communications and analytics services through various datasets, DHS said Tuesday.

AFRL Hosts Collaborative Machine Learning Event with DoD, Universities

Engineers and scientists from the Department of Defense and Air Force Research Laboratory met with representatives from various universities to augment collaborative efforts and discuss potential machine learning research gaps. Attendees from the University of Chicago, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Toyota Technological Institute joined government experts to examine concerns in autonomous, command and control and artificial intelligence technologies, the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base said Tuesday.

DHS S&T Seeks Proposals for MBA Program Dev’t Initiative

The Department of Homeland Security released a request for proposals to establish an Executive Master of Business Administration learning track through the Center of Excellence program. DHS said Tuesday that its Science and Technology Directorate intends to award $10.5M to an accredited U.S. institution to develop the MBA program spanning business management, legal and technical subject areas.
