IARPA Issues New Awards for Chemical Detection Research Program

The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity has awarded contracts to teams at the University of Michigan and SRI International for research projects on chemical detection. The Department of Homeland Security held a large-scale experiment in Texas to see how emergency responders can utilize new government-developed and commercial technologies integrated into existing public safety systems. The Next Generation First Responder Program– Harris County Operational Experiment at the Port of Houston gathered Houston-based public safety agencies, industry partners, DHS components and the U.S. Coast Guard, DHS said Tuesday.

NASA to Launch Satellites for Signal Distortion Study

NASA plans to launch two small satellites for a mission to study the distortions of radio signal transmissions through the ionosphere, a region where particles ionize into plasma this month. The Enhanced Tandem Beacon Experiment or E-TBEx CubeSats will launch on a SpaceX-made Falcon Heavy rocket as part of the Department of Defense's Space Test Program-2, the space agency said Monday.

Lawmakers Call on FCC to Prioritize Security of Future 5G Network

A bipartisan group of lawmakers sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission calling for increased focus on security for the 5G network, which the Trump administration wants to introduce nationwide. “As our U.S. network operators, from the largest to the smallest, gear up for significant infrastructure buildout for 5G and other advanced technologies, security should be a critical consideration and associated rules and regulations should be as clear as possible,” reads the letter issued Thursday by the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
