Air Force Declares SBIRS GEO-4 Satellite Operational

The fourth missile warning satellite that Lockheed Martin built for the U.S. Air Force has reached operational acceptance designation from Space Command. The service said Thursday that the Space Based Infrared System Geosynchronous Earth Orbit 4 satellite transmits data to the 460th space wing-run mission control station at Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado.

Mike Leahy to Lead DARPA’s Tactical Tech Office

Mike Leahy, a former executive at Northrop Grumman, will serve as head of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s tactical technology office, SpaceNews reported Wednesday. DARPA Director and a 2019 Wash100 winner Steven Walker told the publication on Wednesday that Leahy will join the agency in late May to succeed Fred Kennedy, who was recently named head of the Department of Defense’s space development agency.

Air Force Delivers ‘Unified Platform’ Increment 1 to Cybercom

Department of Defense officials said the U.S. Air Force developed the first iteration of a cyber platform designed to help cyber forces perform mission planning, share information and deliver command-and-control systems to support cyber missions, Fifth Domain reported Monday. A spokesman for the Air Force said the service handed over to U.S. Cyber Command the first increment of the Unified Platform April 9. Increment 1 features capabilities for interoperability and defensive cyber operations.

A senior Pentagon official said the U.S. Air Force’s new B-21 Bomber aircraft is ready to make its first flight after completing all developmental checkpoints, Military.com reported Wednesday. Lt. Gen. Arnold Bunch, Air Force military deputy to the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Acquisition at the Pentagon, announced the progress during a meeting with a Senate Armed Services subcommittee.

Air Force Selects Ellsworth AFB as Potential B-21 Bomber Aircraft Base

The U.S. Air Force plans to designate Ellsworth AF Base in South Dakota as the location of its B-21 Raider bomber aircraft, the service branch said Wednesday. The Air Force chose Ellsworth AFB to host the first operational B-21 and its related training operations due to the installation’s capacity to handle simultaneous missions with reduced costs and minimal impact on operations.

Report: Air Force Eyes March 29 Release of Final Launch Service Procurement Solicitation

An Air Force official said service leaders and Ellen Lord, defense undersecretary for acquisition and sustainment and a 2019 Wash100 Award winner, are scheduled to meet on Thursday to discuss the details of the final request for proposals for the Launch Service Procurement program, SpaceNews reported Saturday. The report said the service issued draft RFPs in December and February with plans to release the final solicitation on Friday, March 29, for the LSP program.
