A bipartisan group of House lawmakers on Tuesday introduced legislation that seeks to protect the U.S. telecommunication supply chain from foreign interference. The Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act would prohibit any organization from using federal funds to procure communications products or services that  might pose a national security threat to domestic networks.

Federal Interim Rule Prohibits Gov’t Procurement of Chinese Telecom Equipment

A council of officials from the General Services Administration, NASA and the Department of Defense published an interim rule that would prohibit federal agencies from buying telecommunications and video surveillance systems and services from Huawei and four other Chinese telecom companies, Nextgov reported Tuesday.

FAR Amendment Bans Gov’t Purchase of Chinese Telecom, Video Surveillance Equipment

The Department of Defense, General Services Administration and NASA are issuing an interim final rule prohibiting agencies from purchasing telecommunications and video surveillance equipment from selected Chinese vendors. The rule amends the Federal Acquisition Regulation to include a section of the fiscal 2019 National Defense Authorization Act and covers all existing indefinite-delivery/indefinite quantity contracts seeking services or equipment for securing and monitoring critical government infrastructure.
