Ryan McCarthy, secretary of the U.S. Army, said the service branch needs to implement 3D printing or additive manufacturing for cost reduction and capability boost purposes, Defense News reported Sunday. He said at the Reagan National Defense Forum that the Army must adopt 3D printing for the production of spare parts for weapon systems.

DoD OIG Audit Confirms Department’s Implementation of 3D Printing Tech

The Department of Defense's inspector general office found in an audit that DoD has implemented policy on additive manufacturing across the Defense Logistics Agency and the four service branches. At least 81 military facilities have used AM or 3D printing to manufacture a variety of tools to address the absence of phased out parts, reduce maintenance hours and improve existing system components, DoD Office of the Inspector General said Monday.

Norfolk Shipyard Explores Ways to Innovate Naval 3D Printing

Norfolk Naval Shipyard's Technology and Innovation Laboratory is studying the use of 3D printing in naval operations. The T&Y Lab works with other additive manufacturing teams within the shipyard to experiment the use of resin, carbon fiber and other raw materials for 3D printing, Naval Sea Systems Command said Friday.

Army Taps Worcester Polytechnic Institute to Develop Cold Spray 3D Printing Method

Army Research Laboratory has awarded a three-year, $25M grant to Worcester Polytechnic Institute for further development of a repair method that combines cold spray and 3D printing. WPI said Tuesday that it will develop new metal alloys for cold spray to provide a more efficent repair method for the battlefield.

New Marine Corps Unit Takes up Manufacturing Training Task

Marine Corps Systems Command has established a new manufacturing-focused unit due to new responsibilities gained in the first quarter of 2019. The command said Monday that its new Advanced Manufacturing Operations Cell carries the task of training marines on manufacturing methods applicable on the battlefield. AMOC succeeds a branch within the Deputy Commandant Installation and Logistics that provided manufacturing training to marines for years.
