Air Force Accelerates Acquisition to Bring in New Capabilities

Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson said that congressional authorities for rapid technology prototyping and testing helped the service meet its Century Challenge milestone to cut 100 years from ongoing weapons development programs. The service said Thursday it started streamlining processes in May 2018 through the authorities provided by the Fiscal 2016 National Defense Authorization Act.

Senate Armed Services Committee OKs Space Force Proposal

The Senate Armed Services Committee approved the Trump administration's proposal to establish a Space Force as part of the panel's fiscal 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, the Hill reported Thursday. The $750 billion NDAA earmarks $72.4 million to establish the new military branch to operate under the U.S. Air Force and mandates the appointment of a Space Force commander.

USAF Sees Value in Faulty Data; Frank Konieczny Quoted

Analysts from the U.S. Air Force see to it that bad data must undergo evaluation with senior leadership before fixing, Fedscoop reported Wednesday. Frank Konieczny, USAF chief technology officer, said the service branch is working to keep data flaws uncensored. Data flaws may include obsolete formatting, typos and incorrect or incomplete input.

Report: Air Force Launches Probe Into Navy-Linked Cyber Intrusion

A memo says the U.S. Air Force reported intrusion of its network using malware and is investigating the U.S. Navy with regard to the latter’s possible involvement in the cyber attack, Air Force Times reported Tuesday. Navy Capt. David Wilson, chief of staff for the military branch’s defense service offices, wrote in the memo that a Navy prosecutor involved in a Navy SEAL’s war crimes case in San Diego used tracking software to trace emails sent to defense lawyers in an effort to find the source of media leaks.

USAF-MIT R&D Partnership to Tackle AI Tech

The U.S. Air Force has contracted the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to perform research and development on artificial intelligence technologies. The institute will work with 11 selected airmen to study, develop and field AI technologies to address national security and real-world issues, USAF said Monday. The service branch will allot $15 million annually for the partnership.

Air Force Working on New Guidelines to Expand Personnel Promotions

The U.S. Air Force plans to implement a new promotion system to enable space, nuclear missiles and cybersecurity personnel to take on higher positions across the service, Space News reported Thursday. The promotion system will designate officers in the categories of air operations and special warfare, nuclear and missile operations, space operations, information warfare, combat support and force modernization. To date, only Air Force lawyers, chaplains and medical professional can compete for promotions within their categories.

USAF, University of Dayton Research Institute to Test C-130 Aircraft Sustainment Tech

Air Force Life Cycle Management Center and University of Dayton Research Institute will perform various technology demonstrations with a decommissioned C-130 aircraft. Eglin Air Force Base completed the transport aircraft's delivery to UDRI’s headquarters on Wednesday, Wright-Patterson AFB said the same day. UDRI and teams from AFLCMC will use the aircraft to test technologies designed to reduce C-130 sustainment costs.

Matthew Donovan Named Acting Air Force Secretary

Matthew Donovan, undersecretary of the U.S. Air Force, will serve as the service’s interim secretary, effective June 1, the Department of Defense said in a news release published Wednesday. He will assume the responsibilities of Air Force Secretary and 2019 Wash100 winner Heather Wilson, who will step down from her post to join the University of Texas at El Paso as president.
