NASA’s OSIRIS-REx Mission Concludes Sample Collection on Bennu Asteroid


A NASA mission to study Bennu has concluded flyover activities and is moving away from the near-Earth asteroid following “Touch and Go” material excavation and sample collection operations. NASA said Thursday that the Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission completed its flyby on April 7th at 6 a.m. EDT.

NASA to Stow OSIRIS-REx Asteroid Samples Ahead of Schedule

NASA is preparing to transport and stow a large collection of surface samples from the Bennu asteroid to a sample return capsule. The space agency said that it wants to move the samples ahead of schedule to avoid further spilling out from the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. The OSIRIS-REx team will transmit preliminary commands to the spacecraft.

NASA Chooses Sample Collection Site for Asteroid Mission

A NASA-led team has identified a sample collection site on Asteroid Bennu for a certain investigative mission, following a year of assessments. The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer or OSIRIS-Rex team selected the "Nightingale" site due to the abundance of fine-grained material and low amount of hazards, NASA said Friday.

NASA Identifies Potential Sites for Asteroid Bennu Material Sampling Mission

NASA has chosen four candidate areas on asteroid Bennu that may serve as sample collection sites for the Lockheed Martin-built Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer spacecraft.
