Core Stage of SLS Rocket for Lunar Mission Nears Completion

NASA and Boeing have assembled 80 percent of the core stage of the Space Launch System rocket to bring the Orion spacecraft to the moon as part of the Artemis 1 mission. The agency said Monday that the milestone comes after crews connected the hydrogen fuel tank to the SLS core stage’s upper part, which consists of the intertank, liquid oxygen propellant tank and the forward skirt housing the rocket’s flight computers.

FAA Appoints Michael Chasen as DAC Chairman, Adds 12 Members

Michael Chasen, CEO at PrecisionHAWK USA, has been named chairman of the Federal Aviation Administration's Drone Advisory Committee by Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao. The 35-man committee was formed to help FAA address concerns and prioritize update efforts for unmanned air vehicles, the agency said Monday. The agency also appointed 12 new members from companies, government agencies and organizations that support drone initiatives.

Navy, Marine Corps Planning to Acquire Boeing-Developed T-X Trainer Aircraft

The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps are planning to acquire T-X trainer aircraft to replace the T-45 Goshawk trainer and F-5 simulator currently deployed by both service branches, Defense News reported Tuesday. A Boeing-Saab team secured a potential $9.2 billion contract to produce a maximum of 475 T-X aircraft and 120 simulators for the U.S. Air Force in 2018.

Nearly 100 Lawmakers Pushing for More F-35s for US Military

A bipartisan group of 99 House lawmakers agreed to increase the U.S. military’s fleet of F-35 fighter aircraft to reduce maintenance cost and address growing threats of other countries’ missile systems and stealth fighters, Defense News reported Monday. The Joint Strike Fighter Caucus sent a letter to House leaders calling for 12 additional F-35As and 12 F-35Bs for President Trump’s 2020 budget request.

Report: DoD’s F-15 Procurement Decision Seeks to Gain Diversity in Fighter Aircraft Industrial Base

A senior defense official said the Department of Defense’s decision to procure a new variant of Boeing-built F-15 fighter aircraft hopes to demonstrate DoD’s desire to keep two U.S.-based jet manufacturers in business in the next 10 years, Defense One reported Friday. “One of the considerations was the diversity of the industrial base,” the senior official said.

USAF OKs Continued KC-46 Aircraft Deliveries

The U.S. Air Force resumed acceptance of Boeing-made KC-46 Pegasus tanker aircraft after a nearly month-long delivery halt caused by debris found in one of the units, Reuters reported Tuesday. Rose Riley, a representative of the Air Force Air Mobility Command, said in a statement that the service branch will continue to accept deliveries as Boeing inspects each aircraft as part of a corrective action plan.
