GSA Receives Technology Modernization Funds to Support Pay Management System

The General Services Administration has taken $20.7M from the government's Technology Modernization Fund for the development of a new cloud-based pay and personnel management system, Federal Times reported Tuesday. The funds will support the GSA NewPay project that was meant to be a 10-year, $2.5B contract the agency awarded to teams led by Carahsoft and Grant Thornton.

Pentagon’s Base-Budget Costs Projected to Climb Through 2033

The Congressional Budget Office projects that the Pentagon’s 2019 Future Years Defense Program is leading to a significant increase in the agency’s base-budget costs into the early 2030's. In a report released Wednesday, CBO said the figure could increase from the agency’s request of $617B for 2019 to $735B in 2033. In April, the Department of Defense released the 2019 FYDP detailing the expectations about the planned costs from 2019 to 2023.

Shanahan Welcomes NATO’s Progress on Operations, Burden-Sharing

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan met with NATO Secretary Jens Stoltenberg and discussed the alliance’s operational progress and efforts to increase burden-sharing.  During the meeting at the Pentagon, Shanahan highlighted that NATO member nations in Europe have increased contributions to training local forces in Afghanistan and Iraq to deter the Islamic State group, the Department of Defense said Monday.

Lisa Hershman: DoD Expected to Save $6B for FY 2019

Lisa Hershman, acting chief management officer of the Department of Defense, said in an interview the department is on the track to reach $6B in savings for fiscal year 2019, ABC News reported Saturday. Hershman noted that the DoD’s streamlining efforts for its projects and business strategies has enabled the department to save $4.7B in 2017 and 2018.

USMC Requesting $14B in FY 2020 Funding for Modernization, Readiness

Lt. Gen. Brian Beaudreault, the U.S. Marine Corps’ deputy commandant for plans, policies and operations, announced the USMC is requesting $14B for modernization and $13.8B for near-term readiness efforts, USNI News reported Thursday. Each appropriation accounts for 30 percent of the service branch’s total budget for fiscal year 2020.

House Releases Bill Increasing $150M Tech Modernization Fund Amid Shutdown

The House Appropriations Committee released a spending bill adding $25M to the Technology Modernization Fund intended to provide assistance to agencies with crucial information technology programs, Nextgov reported Tuesday. The legislation is the tenth spending bill seeking to reopen parts of the federal government following the longest shutdown in U.S. history.

USAF Spends Part of Funds Allotted for Commercial Satellite Data

The U.S. Air Force used $7M for commercial satellite weather data as part of an effort to determine whether or not the data would meet military requirements, Space News reported Thursday. The obligated funds come from the service branch's congress-approved $20M budget for the Commercial Weather Data Pilot Program.

Advisory Panel Says Pentagon Needs ‘War Footing Approach’ to Defense Tech Acquisitions

An advisory group created by Congress has released a report that calls for the Department of Defense to adopt a “war footing approach” when it comes to the acquisition and delivery of technological capabilities to warfighters to keep ahead of near-peer competitors’ tech advances, National Defense reported Tuesday. The Section 809 Panel said in the report its 58 recommendations are divided into 12 sections including the Dynamic Marketplace Framework, portfolio management, information technology procurement, budget and acquisition workforce.
