Census Bureau Deploying GEOINT-Based Canvassing System for 2020 Count

The Census Bureau is implementing a new canvassing system that uses satellite imagery data to identify addresses for the 2020 population count, Federal News Network reported Monday. Steven Dillingham, director of the Census Bureau, said the agency has begun using the geospatial intelligence-based Block Assessment, Research and Classification Application and will launch a “full-fledged” canvassing effort using the system this month.

Census Bureau Wants to Build AI Bot to Accelerate ATO Processing

The Census Bureau aims to develop an artificial intelligence-based tool to streamline and speed up the process to grant authority to operate for new systems and applications, Nextgov reported Wednesday. The effort is being led by the Census FISMAtic team. Officials said the AI bot would work like the Clippy automated assistant that supported Microsoft Office products from 1997 to 2007.

GAO Recommends the Census Bureau to Reinforce Cybersecurity Efforts for 2020 Census

e Government Accountability Office made two recommendations to the Census Bureau to mitigate potential risks and boost the census process. GAO said Tuesday that the secretary of the Department of Commerce should advise the director of the Census Bureau to command the chief information officer to ensure that corrective actions for cybersecurity gaps will be applied and draft a procedure for the execution and monitoring of remedial activities.

Kevin Smith, chief information officer of the Census Bureau, said the agency will ensure encryption of data as it anticipates receiving 60 percent of its responses online for the 2020 count, FCW reported Wednesday. Smith said during an event Tuesday that the bureau will seek the help of intelligence agencies to support its cybersecurity efforts for Census 2020.

The Census Bureau hosted an event on Friday to provide federal agencies, companies and nongovernmental organizations the opportunity to demonstrate their technology platforms using data from various agencies, FCW reported Sunday.
