Sen. John Hawley, R-Mo., has proposed legislation that seeks to protect U.S. citizens' personal data from hostile foreign nations that may pose security risks. The National Security and Personal Data Protection Act would prohibit the transmission of user data or encryption keys to foreign countries such as China and storage of information there, Hawley's office said Monday.

Chinese Investments in US Startups Drop Amid Wider Scrutiny of Tech Deals

Chinese-backed venture capital firms are closing U.S. offices, reducing their U.S. investments or changing the structure of their investments to avoid scrutiny from government regulators as U.S. startups shy away from Chinese investors amid rising tensions between the two countries, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. Research firm Rhodium Group said Chinese investments in U.S. startups hit record levels in early 2018 but started to drop in May 2018.

Treasury Dept Issues Interim Rules for Foreign Investment Review Pilot Program

The Treasury Department has released interim regulations for a pilot program to assess foreign acquisitions of critical U.S. technologies and intellectual property in compliance with the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act of 2018. “These temporary regulations address specific risks to U.S. critical technology while informing the development of final regulations that will fully implement FIRRMA,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement published Wednesday.
