Senators Ask FBI, CISA to Provide Details Over SolarWinds Orion Compromise

A group of six senators has called on leaders of the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to respond to several questions with regard to a cyber vulnerability involving SolarWinds’ Orion Network Management products. The letter came days after CISA issued an emergency directive directing all agencies to immediately disconnect SolarWinds Orion products versions 2019.4 to 2020.2.1 HF1.

Christopher Wray: ‘Almost Half’ of FBI’s 5K Counterintelligence Investigations Linked to China

FBI Director Christopher Wray said China is using cyber-intrusion techniques and bribing “trusted insiders” to steal U.S. intellectual property during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wray said almost 50 percent of the FBI’s nearly 5,000 counterintelligence investigations are linked to China and that the bureau opens a China-related investigation every 10 hours.

Christopher Wray on FBI’s Efforts to Fight Threats Posed by Russia, China

FBI Director Christopher Wray said Russia continues to carry out election interference efforts and that the U.S. considers China as the most “severe counterintelligence threat,” Nextgov reported Wednesday. Wray told the Senate Judiciary Committee in his testimony Tuesday that the bureau is collaborating with the private sector and other federal agencies to make the public aware of Russia’s influence and misinformation campaigns as well as counter the spread of deepfakes.

Sen. Angus King Announces New Commission to Advance Cyber Strategy

Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) launched a new commission that would implement a strategy for cyber space by pursuing three strategic options: deterrence, international agreement and persistent engagement, Breaking Defense reported Monday. “One of the motivations of this is that, right now, the cyber responsibility is scattered throughout the federal government,” King said of the new 14-member commission.
